The Cross and Resurrection: What Did He Do?
The Blood of Jesus: What It Actually Does
30 min read
The blood of Jesus is not merely a historical fact or a liturgical metaphor. In the New Testament, it is the ongoing basis for forgiveness, access to God, and covenant life.
"The blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin." — 1 John 1:7
1. Blood carries covenant meaning throughout Scripture.
In Exodus 24:8, Moses sprinkles blood on the people as God ratifies the covenant: "This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you." In Leviticus, blood is the vehicle of atonement: "The life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls" Leviticus 17:11. When Jesus holds up the cup at the Last Supper and says "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins" Matthew 26:28, he is placing himself in direct continuity with — and as the fulfillment of — the entire Levitical covenant structure.
2. The blood of Jesus accomplishes forgiveness.
Ephesians 1:7 — "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses." Hebrews 9:22 — "Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins." This is not primitive religion. It is the logic of the covenant: the penalty for broken relationship is death, and the shedding of blood represents both the acknowledgment of that penalty and its payment. In Jesus, that penalty is paid once, finally, completely.
3. The blood of Jesus gives access to God.
Hebrews 10:19-22 — "Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh... let us draw near." The tearing of the temple curtain at the moment of Jesus' death Matthew 27:51 was not a random supernatural event. It was the physical sign of what the cross accomplished spiritually: the barrier between God and humanity was removed. Access is now available — not on the basis of human righteousness, but on the basis of Jesus' blood.
4. The blood of Jesus speaks better than Abel's blood.
Hebrews 12:24 says we have come to "Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel." Abel's blood cried out from the ground for justice and vengeance Genesis 4:10. Jesus' blood speaks — in the present tense — a better word: mercy, forgiveness, and access. The blood of Jesus is not merely historical. It is a present reality in the heavenly mediatorial ministry of Christ.
5. The blood of Jesus is the foundation of the believer's life.
1 John 1:7 connects walking in the light with the ongoing cleansing function of Jesus' blood: "If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin." The tense is present continuous — goes on cleansing. This is not a one-time transaction followed by moral self-management. It is the ongoing basis for fellowship with God throughout the Christian life.
- 1 Read Hebrews 9:11-28 in one sitting. List every action the author says the blood of Christ accomplishes.
- 2 Journal: when you sin, do you typically experience the cleansing described in 1 John 1:7, or do you carry guilt as if the cross were not sufficient? Why?
- 3 Pray Hebrews 10:19-22 back to God as an act of faith — approaching God with the confidence the text commands.
Read 1 John 1:5-2:2. Write a paragraph: what is the relationship between confessing sin, walking in the light, and the blood of Jesus?
Submit your paragraph on 1 John and your journal answer about guilt after sin.
- 1 Q: What does the blood of Jesus accomplish according to Ephesians 1:7?
A: Redemption and forgiveness of sins.
- 2 Q: What did the tearing of the temple curtain signify?
A: That the barrier between God and humanity was removed by the cross — giving all believers direct access to God.
- 3 Q: Is the blood of Jesus a past event or an ongoing reality?
A: Both. Historically accomplished at the cross; presently operative in the ongoing mediatorial ministry of the ascended Christ and in the ongoing cleansing of the believer's conscience 1 John 1:7.
Lord, let the blood of Jesus be not just a theological concept to me but a present reality I live from — the basis of my forgiveness, my access to you, and my confidence before you. Amen.
