Module 4: The Spirit's Voice
9 min read
The Holy Spirit will never contradict the Scripture He inspired. That may sound obvious, but it is essential. Many people claim the Spirit told them to do something that clearly violates God's Word. That is not the Spirit. It is deception, desire, or imagination.
Peter writes that "no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit" 2 Peter 1:20-21. The Spirit is the author of Scripture.
But the Spirit is also the interpreter. Paul prays that the Ephesians would receive "the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better" Ephesians 1:17. The Spirit opens our eyes to understand what we read.
Psalms 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." A lamp does not illuminate the entire landscape. It lights the next step. Scripture gives us the boundaries, principles, and commands we need for the vast majority of decisions.
If Scripture clearly commands or forbids something, you do not need a special revelation. You need obedience.
Reading Scripture with the Spirit means more than reading words on a page. It means:
Scripture does not always tell you which job to take or whom to marry. But it gives you the character, priorities, and boundaries within which any good decision must fit. A job that requires dishonesty is out. A marriage to someone who does not love Jesus is out. Within those boundaries, the Spirit gives wisdom.
Before asking the Spirit for guidance on a specific matter, ask Him to search you through Scripture. Often, the guidance you need has already been given in the Word.
