Module 3: The Spirit Within
9 min read
There is a birth that happens only once, and it changes everything. Jesus called it being "born again" — not a physical rebirth, but a spiritual one. This new birth is the work of the Holy Spirit, and it is the doorway to the kingdom of God.
In John 3, a respected religious leader named Nicodemus comes to Jesus in secret. He acknowledges that Jesus is a teacher sent from God because of the miracles. But Jesus cuts to the heart of the matter: "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again" John 3:3.
Nicodemus is confused. He thinks literally. "How can someone be born when they are old?" he asks. "Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother's womb to be born!" John 3:4.
Jesus clarifies: "Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit" John 3:6. The new birth is not biological. It is spiritual. It is not something you do for yourself. It is something the Spirit does in you.
Jesus continues with one of His most beautiful images: "The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit" John 3:8.
The Spirit is like wind — free, mysterious, unseen, but real. You do not control the wind. You cannot manufacture it. You can only observe its effects. In the same way, you cannot generate your own new birth. You can only respond to the Spirit who is already at work.
Being born of the Spirit means:
You cannot see the moment of your new birth, but you can see its fruit. Do you love Jesus? Do you hate sin and turn from it? Do you desire the things of God? Do you love other believers? These desires are evidences that the Spirit has given you new life.
If you are unsure whether you have been born of the Spirit, do not look primarily at your feelings. Look at Christ. The one who trusts in Jesus has the Son and has life 1 John 5:12. The Spirit's first work is always to point us to Jesus.
