Part IV — Where It Is All Headed
The Seven Judgments of Scripture
18 min read
Most people have one vague picture of 'the judgment' — a day when everyone stands before God and receives their eternal verdict. But Scripture describes not one judgment, but seven distinct ones, each with a different subject, a different judge, a different time, and different outcomes. Confusing them is one of the main reasons people end up terrified by passages that don't apply to them or complacent about passages that do.
Last time we established where the dead are — that death is not the end of consciousness but a transition. Now we examine what awaits: the seven distinct judgments Scripture describes for both the saved and the lost.
The Bible reveals that different groups will face judgment at different times and places. Angels and various categories of people will each have their own separate judgment. In all, there are seven distinct judgments revealed in Scripture.
Let's walk through each one, looking at who's being judged, when and where it happens, what it's based on, and what the outcome is.
The Judgment of the Believer'S Sin John 12:31-32
1. Subject: The believer as to sin Romans 6:10Hebrews 9:25-28.
2. Time: On the cross John 3:141 Peter 2:24John 17:4.
3. Place: Calvary Luke 23:33John 19:17-24.
4. Basis: Christ's perfect work John 3:16John 5:24Romans 6:8.
5. Result: Death to Christ, justification to believers Romans 4:1-25Romans 5:1-11, 15-21Romans 8:1-16. This judgment deals with the believer as a sinner.
Here's the incredible news: if you're a believer, the judgment for your sin has already happened! It took place two thousand years ago at Calvary when Jesus hung on the cross.
Think of it like someone paying off your entire debt before you even knew you owed it. Christ took the full penalty that your sin deserved. The result? Death came to Him, but justification—being declared righteous—came to you.
This judgment deals with you as a sinner, addressing the fundamental problem of your guilt before God.
The Believer'S Judgment of Himself 1 Corinthians 11:31, 32
1. Subjects: Believers walking in the light 1 John 1:7.
2. Time: During this life Ephesians 4:22-32Colossians 3:5-17.
3. Place: In his own life Romans 8:1-16Hebrews 12:5-11.
4. Basis: Obedience to God and His Word James 1:22-25.
5. Result: Chastisement or approval from God Hebrews 12:5-11. This judgment deals with the believer as a son during his earthly pilgrimage.
This one is happening right now, every day of your life. As a believer, you're called to examine yourself—to walk in the light and honestly evaluate your thoughts, words, and actions against God's Word.
It's similar to how a good athlete reviews their own performance after every game. You don't wait for the coach to point out every mistake; you look at the film yourself and make corrections.
When you judge yourself honestly and deal with sin, God doesn't have to discipline you. But when you refuse to examine yourself, your loving Father will step in with correction. This judgment deals with you as a child of God during your journey through this life.
