Supplement 10 — For Lessons 17 & 18: Angels in Scripture and Worship
Key Terms
The Angel of the Lord (malakh YHWH) — A special figure in the Old Testament who speaks with divine authority and accepts worship; many Fathers identified these appearances as pre-incarnate manifestations of the Son of God.
Christophany — A pre-incarnate appearance of Christ; the classical patristic interpretation of many "Angel of the Lord" appearances.
The Sanctus — "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts"; the triple-holy hymn at Mass, quoting Isaiah 6:3 (Seraphim) and echoed in Revelation 4:8 (living creatures).
Hebrews 12:22 — The declaration that every Christian gathering takes place in the presence of "innumerable angels in festal gathering."

Questions for Reflection
- 1 Angels appear at every major transition in salvation history. What does this consistent presence reveal about God's economy of providence?
- 2 Paul says that when Christians gather, they come to "innumerable angels in festal gathering" Hebrews 12:22. How does this awareness change your experience of Sunday worship?
- 3 The Sanctus links the earthly liturgy to the Seraphim's song in Isaiah 6 and the living creatures in Revelation 4. When you sing Holy, Holy, Holy, you are joining a hymn that has never ceased in heaven. What does this mean to you personally?
- 4 Angels are sent to the vulnerable throughout the Old Testament — Hagar, Elijah, Lot. In what moments of vulnerability have you trusted that God's angels were present?
- 5 At Gethsemane, an angel strengthened Jesus in His agony. If an angel was sent to strengthen the Son of God in human suffering, what does this say about God's attentiveness to our own moments of suffering and prayer?
