Gabriel ("God is my strength") — Archangel of Annunciation; created to deliver the message of the Incarnation; patron of messengers.
Raphael ("God heals") — Archangel of healing and accompaniment; patron of travelers, the blind, and medical workers; reveals himself as "one of the seven holy angels who present the prayers of the saints."
The Angelus — Traditional Catholic prayer recited three times daily, commemorating Gabriel's Annunciation, the Incarnation, and Mary's fiat.
The Book of Tobit — Deuterocanonical book containing Raphael's primary scriptural appearance; canonical in Catholic and Orthodox tradition.
Luke 1:26-28 "In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, 'Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!'"
Daniel 9:21-22 "While I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, came to me in swift flight... He made me understand, speaking with me and saying, 'O Daniel, I have now come out to give you insight and understanding.'"
Tobit 12:15 "I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels who present the prayers of the saints and enter into the presence of the holy God."
