World English Bible

The World English Bible (WEB) is a free, public-domain revision of the American Standard Version (1901), updated to remove archaic language and correct textual issues. It is entirely free of copyright restrictions, making it the most widely used public-domain modern Bible translation in apps, software, and global missions where royalty-free text is required.

History & Background

Michael Paul Johnson began work in 1994, originally updating the ASV. Available in multiple editions including Protestant (66 books), Catholic (with deuterocanonicals), and Eastern Orthodox editions. The WEB uses the Majority Text for the New Testament, unlike the ASV's Westcott-Hort text base. Continuously revised; major revision completed 2020. Used in thousands of Bible apps, websites, and mission translations worldwide.
