NRSVue — New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition
The New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition (NRSVue) is the most significant revision of the NRSV (1989) since its publication. Released digitally on Christmas Day 2021 and in print in 2022, it incorporates approximately 20,000 revisions reflecting advances in textual criticism, Dead Sea Scrolls scholarship, Septuagint studies, and linguistic research. It is now the standard Bible translation for most mainline Protestant seminaries and academic institutions.
History & Background
The revision was announced at the 2017 Society of Biblical Literature Annual Meeting. Over 50 scholars participated, led by an SBL editorial board. The NRSVue updates many renderings based on the latest manuscript evidence, corrects gender-inclusive language to be more consistent with the Greek and Hebrew, and reflects 30+ years of advances in biblical scholarship since the NRSV. Endorsed by Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox scholars.
Canon Proximity Rating
Available in Protestant (66 books), Catholic (73 books), and expanded editions with Apocrypha. Now the primary academic and ecumenical translation, replacing NRSV at most seminaries.
