NRSV HarperCollins Study Bible

The premier academic study Bible, edited by the Society of Biblical Literature with notes by leading biblical scholars covering archaeology, history, and theology.

History & Background

The New Revised Standard Version was published in 1989 by the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of Churches, as a thorough revision of the RSV (1952). It was the first major Protestant translation to use consistent gender-inclusive language for human references. The NRSV became the translation of choice for many mainline denominations, Catholic institutions, and academic settings. A further revision, the NRSVue, appeared in 2021.

Canon Proximity Rating

Canon Proximity6.0 / 10 — Moderate

Many NRSV editions include the Apocrypha/deuterocanonical books, departing from the strict 66-book Protestant canon. The base 66-book text is accurate, but inclusion of additional books reduces the Protestant canon score.

Rating Scale

9–10: Formally equivalent, 66 books
7–8: Dynamic equiv., 66 books
5–6: Includes Apocrypha
1–4: Major departures / additions
